Does a Sump Pump Have Water In It?

It’s normal for a sump pump to have water in it all the time, that is a little water. Too much water is not a good sign and can become a problem.

It is important to understand what a sump pump is and if you need one in your home or office. First, there are multiple types of sump pumps which are normally located and buried in a pit in the basement or crawlspace floor. The pump is roughly only 2 feet tall and less than that in width. The pit that it sits in is roughly the size of a 5-gallon bucket.

Another type of sump pump is a pedestal pump, this sits on top of the pit instead of inside it. Since it sits on the top it is noisier when running.

The sump pump begins to work when water is detected under the floor surface. The water flows into the pit and triggers the sump pump to turn on and then redirect the water away from the structure.

Most sump pumps are powered by electricity and run off of a standard household current. When water is entering the pit, the sump pump will automatically turn on and push the water away from the building helping to keep everything dry.
