Prevent a Flooded Basement

We may not think about ways to prevent a flooded basement until the rain starts pouring and it is too late.  Here are a few tips to help prevent your below ground basement from flooding.

Downspouts & Gutters

It is not uncommon for your gutter to collect debris which can block water flow during a rainstorm. It the water is not freely flowing you may see it collecting against the foundation of your home and seep into the basement. You should periodically clean your gutters and make sure the downspouts are directing water at least 3’ away from your home.

Repair Cracks in the Foundation

If you have any cracks in the foundation make sure you repair them. You can do your part to fill them yourself with epoxy.  If home improvement projects are not your cup of tea reach out to a professional for help.

Landscape

If you have a slope in your yard the water could be draining towards your home and contributing to your water issues. Consider re-grading your yard or installing a French drain to direct water flow away from the foundation of home’s foundation.

Sump Pump

Install a sump pump. Sump pumps are designed to pump excess water from the basement or crawl space to the outside your home. They are typically installed under the floor of crawl spaces and basements to collect groundwater before it can flood and cause damage to your home during long periods of rain.
