Tips to Unclog a Drain

Unclogging a drain is not a fun task for the faint of heart. But unfortunately it is not one that can be postponed. We are able to know a clog is there when water begins to slowly stop going down the drain or stop all together. Here are a few tips to unclog a drain and get it moving again.

Boiling Water

Pouring boiling water down a drain is a go to strategy with a clogged drain. It can loosen up different debris like hair, grease or soap residue. Boil roughly half a gallon of water and steadily pour it down the drain. After all the water has been poured, turn on the faucet testing to see if the drain is working again. If not, you may want to repeat the process of call your Greenville plumber. Be cautious if the drain is attached to PVC pipes, boiling water could cause damage and melt the pipes.

Garbage Disposal

If you are experiencing a clog in the kitchen sink you can use your garbage disposal to break it up. If you are hearing a low humming sound that can mean that the garbage disposal is jammed or clogged. It is important to never stick your hand in the garbage disposal and to use other tools to eliminate the blockage. Once the blockage is removed, test the drain again by running water and see if it drains properly.

Plunge

A flat bottom plunger is recommended for unclogging sinks. Run hot water to fill the sink until it is about halfway full. While maintaining a firm grip on the plunger quickly pump it up and down. After removing the plunger check to see if the sink is draining and has returned to normal. You may need to repeat the process.

Baking Soda and Vinegar

This combination of vinegar and baking soda creates a mixture that can break down blockage. This is a natural alternative to chemical drain cleaners. You will need to remove any standing water using a cup or a bowl. Pour one cup of baking soda down the drain, using a long object if necessary to get the baking soda in the drain. Then pour a cup of white vinegar and seal the drain opening. After letting the mixture set up for about 15 minutes, remove the cover and pour boiling water down the drain. Now check to see if the drain is unclogged.
