How to Clean a Shower Head

The age-old discussion of how to clean a shower head is finally being put to rest. You may have noticed that shower heads require regular maintenance to remove the accumulated mineral buildup with regular use.

Here are a few simple ways to get your shower head fully clean.

The Plastic Bag Method

  1. Take a gallon size plastic bag and a rubber band.
  2. Fill the bag with 50% water and 50% white vinegar.
  3. Put the bag around the shower head so that it is fully submerged in the solution.
  4. Secure the bag with a rubber band or another strong tie.
  5. Keep the bag on the shower head for a minimum of one hour or overnight*.
  6. After removing the bag with the solution, wipe down the shower head with a damp cloth.
  7. Turn on the shower head to confirm that the spouts have been cleared and water is freely flowing.
  8. If the water is not flowing through the spouts, you may need to repeat the above steps.

*If you have a brass, gold, or nickel coated shower head DO NOT leave the mixture on for more than 30 minutes to not damage the finish.

Scrub Method

This method is recommended when the shower head has a few clogged spouts.

  1. Use the same mixture of 50% water and 50% white vinegar with a toothbrush.
  2. Scrub the shower head with the toothbrush and solution.
  3. Wipe down the shower head with a damp cloth.
  4. Turn on the shower head to see if the spouts are free of the clogs and water is freely flowing.
  5. Feel free to repeat the process if necessary.

Either of these methods can clear out the clogs in the shower head spouts. Use the method you are most comfortable with! If you continue to have any problems or have additional questions, call your Greenville Plumber, Premier Plumbing at 864.444.6570.
